Starting this summer, all telephone calls made in our area code will require the person making the call to include the area code when dialing. Why? Because the number of phone numbers available in our area are running out, a new area code (838) is being added to the area currently served by 518. This is known as an area code overlay. Get ready to change the way you dial your calls. As of August 19th of this year, you will HAVE to dial the area code or the call will not be able to be completed.
This change is happening throughout the 518 area code which includes a large part of the northeastern section of New York State and goes south of Albany, a total of 17 counties. This will affect everyone within this section of the state and ALL providers of telephone service. In addition to changing your dialing procedures, all services, automatic dialing equipment, or other types of equipment that are programmed to dial a 7-digit number will need to be reprogrammed to use the new dialing procedure. Business customers should be prepared to check their websites, business stationery, advertising materials, printed checks, business cards, etc and edit if necessary to include the area code in all places that telephone numbers are listed. For further direction, you can visit the New York State Public Service Commission website at www.dps.ny.gov or see our information sheet here: PL Area Code Overlay Information Sheet.
